I took care of my mother for five yrs. She moved in with me and my four kids after being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s. I quickly schooled myself in both, there’s a lot to learn. I loved taking care of her. I managed 12 different medications that she took. Monitored her blood pressure and her diet. Eventually I cooked & cleaned for her & even helped her bath. She sadly broke her hip & I took care of her at home after she had a 3 day stay at a rehab facility. She got a bedsore from the place, so I took her home so she could heal. I did physical therapy with her and she was up and walking after her surgery within two weeks. Around a year later at the age of 89 she had a massive stroke. I was blessed with the opportunity to bring her home with me for her final days. I was spoon feeding her a purée diet. She was with us for another six weeks. I had a purpose and I was making a difference. I really admire the families that do what they can to keep their loved one’s close by. I want to be there for you & help with your journey also.
